Lough Derg
Lough Derg
Being one of Ireland's largest lakes with a length of 30 kms Lough Derg is just 15 minutes away, providing all kinds of water sport facilities, including cruising, windsurfing, sail boarding and canoeing. Watersport Activity Centres provide for all the necessary gear. Charter boats can be hired for cruising Lough Derg and the Shannon River northbound.

Angling
Castleconnell is better known as a Salmon fishery but has two stretches where coarse fishing is possible. One is upstream from the public car park at the Shannon where open bank fishing is possible. Lake brown trout is indigenous to Lough Derg and are well distributed throughout the lake, as well as pike and coarse fish. Find more information about angling in the area here.

Castleconnell offers beautiful short river walks while a variety of longer loop walks start from O'Briensbridge on the other side of the Shannon in Co.Clare, only a few minutes away (more...) The Lough Derg Cycleway is an established 132 km cycling circuit and well signposted in both directions starting from Killaloe. Walking or cycling is also well possible in the Slieve Aughty and Slieve Beamagh Mountains west of the Shannon/Lough Derg Area and in the Silvermine Mountains, a short drive to the south of Castleconnell.

The area boasts with a number of places of historical interest to explore - the Brian Boru Historical Centre in Killaloe, Ireland's oldest church in Tuamgraney and Holy Island near Mountshannon, to name just a few in Co.Clare. Lough Gur in Co.Limerick is also remarkably rich in ancient monuments with a continuity of man's settlements here from 3.000 BC up to very recent times. Lough Gur is just a 30 mins. drive from Castleconnell.
